My Study System
Outside of the tropics, the LLP savanna ecosystem is among the most biodiverse in the world at small spatial scales due to its high density of understory plant species. Prior to European settlement of North America, the LLP savanna ecosystem was dominant across 9 coastal states of the US southeast and covered an estimated 92 million acres. However, due to overexploitation of the dominant canopy tree, longleaf pine (Pinus palustris), as well as other anthropogenic influences, such as fire suppression, less than 3% of natural stands remain in the historic range of the LLP ecosystem, and as such, much of the biodiversity found in the understory has been lost.
